Led by Bitcoin - the Digital Asset space came roaring out of the gates only to find that crypto's hype had badly outgrown crypto's execution and infrastructure. The interesting thing about hype is that it is often not wrong, just early. This is exactly where crypto sits today - out of the public eye with sentiment levels towards the industry at unprecedented lows.
Since 2021 the asset class has traded through the toughest stretch it has ever seen. Liquidity reversed. A credit collapse took the sector's leverage and a good deal of its credibility with it. Regulators made building here a legal liability instead of an opportunity. And years of token supply landed into a market that had no incremental buyer.
While most are looking elsewhere - the headwinds of years past have reversed and become tailwinds. And with multiple large catalysts already in motion - the convergence has a high likelihood of reminding the world why the crypto asset class has the most upside reflexivity on the planet.
The past five years were disappointing for prices and extraordinarily productive for building. The industry spent the winter constructing the things it had been promising since 2017 into an environment with almost no demand to reward it. Spot ETFs now exist with institutional custody and settlement behind them. Stablecoins have gone from a trading chip to functioning payment infrastructure. Block space works. Protocols are generating real, verifiable revenue rather than subsidized volume. Tokenized treasuries and credit have moved from pilot to actual assets under management. And there is now a federal legal framework to foster innovation where before there was only enforcement.
All of that capacity is built and sitting there largely unused waiting for demand. And a great deal of it was constructed by BlackRock, Fidelity, JPMorgan, Franklin Templeton and many of the largest asset managers in the world - and they built it for a tokenized future they clearly expect to arrive. That is a very different starting condition than 2021, when demand showed up first and the infrastructure buckled underneath it. When capital comes back this time - and it will - it will not have to wait for the plumbing.
For most of its history, crypto demand was mostly speculative. That is changing. Three forces are now converging into structural demand. Individuals are crypto's original buyer - part speculation, part hedge against the steady debasement of fiat currency. Institutions have moved from the sidelines to become material allocators, with ETFs, treasury companies and tokenized assets marking the very early stages of that seismic shift. And now AI agents have arrived as the first users that fundamentally need crypto rails, transacting at machine speed across borders with no human in the loop.
The agentic cohort comes as a pleasant surprise and remains very underappreciated by the market. While AI ravages large swaths of the software landscape - and crypto is simply software at its core - this would seem like a death sentence. However - this misses the key differentiator of crypto - decentralization. The emergence of AI is the largest boost crypto protocols have ever seen because AI agents need exactly that. AI can rebuild centralized software - such as QuickBooks or Salesforce - at a fraction of the cost. AI cannot bootstrap decentralization - Bitcoin's mining network or Hyperliquid's liquidity pools as clear examples. Those are moats that even superintelligence cannot abstract away. Crypto is infrastructure that has to be coordinated - and decentralized coordination at scale requires the tokens and incentives that only these networks offer.
Agents need decentralized crypto networks. Agentic commerce is the newest driver and the most consequential because it is the first time a category of user structurally requires crypto rails rather than merely choosing them. Demand built on necessity behaves differently than demand built on speculation. It is the foundation of durable value.
I read something about AI and crypto the other day that broke my brain in a way that I cannot unthink....
Crypto was never for us.
The Trilemma. The United States is currently committed to three things at once. It has to service and roll roughly $40 trillion of debt. It has to finance the AI buildout, which is being framed openly as a race the country cannot afford to lose. And it is running restrictive monetary policy that makes capital scarcer and more expensive by design. Washington treats the first two as matters of national security. They are enormous and growing claims on capital, and neither one is up for negotiation. The third works directly against them.
Any two of these can coexist. All three cannot. Only one of the three is truly optional and every politically available way out of that box involves lowering the cost of capital and producing more dollars. Crypto has spent five years on the wrong side of that constraint. The infrastructure is built, the demand is arriving, and the one thing still missing happens to be the one thing this system is now obligated to produce.
The rails are built. Demand is growing. Liquidity is on the cusp of expanding rapidly. Markets are completely overlooking the most reflexive opportunity we have seen in years - crypto is back!
